Good to meet likemind-ed people, again
likemind is a great way to have a coffee, a few laughs, and some interesting conversation on a monthly basis. I attended today’s session in NYC, and it was a fantastic time. I spent a good hour and a half talking with a branding specialist, a first year medical student from Australia, a public relations specialist, an engineer and a bit with Piers, one of the founders of the group. We talked about a whole range of things, from our jobs to our careers to different cultures to family life. A fly on the wall heard thoughts and questions like:
- Is it hard, when you work in public relations, to honestly tell people if you like your job?
- Dublin is cooler than New York (wish it were open as late!)
- Football means NFL to Americans, soccer to most of the world, but rugby to Australians.
- The phrase “if you had a million dollars, what would you do” needs updating. How much is it now? $10mm?
- H1B visas stink, why such a barrier on bringing in good talent from outside of the US?
- Working as an engineer for a software company is way different from working as an engineer for a retail company. Biggest difference: more women in the office at retail companies.
- If you have a job where having a lightsaber on your belt is required, you have the best job ever.
- Engineers look at a meeting time of 8, and they automatically think 8pm. Why? Because to most engineers, 8am does not exist.
All that, and free coffee! Well, free to me, paid for by Anomaly.
